CLASSICAL REVIEW OF GANDHAK (SULPHUR)

ABSTRACT

Gandhak (Sulphur) is used in traditional system of medicine, and it is one of the most used mineral in ayurvedic medicines. Gandhak is a great antibacterial, antiviral, anti microbial ayurvedic medicine. It is beneficial in almost all types of infections. Gandhak also helps to treat various skin diseases like ringworm, scabies, itching and other fungal infections. Almost all acharyas include gandhak in in uparas varga. Gandhak seems to be best among all Ras and upras varga dravya. It is also believed that only gandhak is able to form all types of Lauh into bhasam form. Almost all Ras Shastra classic have quoted karam of gandhak as deepan, pachan, rasayan, vrishya, balya, Aam dhosh nashak, Visshaghna. Therefore a classical review of gandhak in various ayurvedic text is necessary.
