ABSTRACT
Hair can be damaged due to UV rays or from the use of hair cosmetics. To restore the normal structure of the hair, hair cosmetic preparations, namely hair tonic, are needed. One of the natural compounds that have antioxidant properties is secang wood which contains brazilin. This study aims to make a hair tonic formulation using ethanol extract and ethanol fraction, and chloroform-methanol fraction of secang wood which have hair growth activity. The simplicia of secang wood was macerated using 96% ethanol, then partitioned using n-hexane. The ethanol fraction was then applied using vacuum column chromatography (KKV) with silica gel 60 as stationary phase using chloroform, chloroform: methanol (5: 1), and methanol as eluent, this step yielded 4 fractions (FCh, FCMe1, FCMe2, and FMe). The fraction obtained was detected using a UV lamp with λ 254 and 366 nm. The ethanol extract, ethanol fraction, and chloroform-methanol fraction of secang wood were then formulated into a hair tonic preparation. Hair tonic evaluation includes a hair growth activity test. Hair tonic from ethanol extract, ethanol fraction, and chloroform-methanol fraction of secang wood gave rabbit hair growth activity on hair length and hair weight parameters. Hair tonic FIII containing a chloroform-methanol fraction of secang wood gave significantly different results from negative control (p <0.05) on rabbit hair length data on day 30 which showed that FIII gave the best activity compared to hair tonic FI and FII.
