ABSTRACT
Cancer is the second cause of death after cardiovascular disease. Cancer prevention can be done with synthetic or traditional treatments. However, synthetic treatments often cause side effects and would require a high cost. Herbal medicine has become a source of cancer treatment that is very safe, easy to obtain, and can minimize side effects. This review discusses the potential of herbal plants as anti-cancer, which has been tested in vitro on various cell lines such as MDA-MB 231, MCF-7, HepG2, PC3, DU-145, Ln-Cap, Tsu-Pr1, C-33A, A5-49 and HeLa as well as in vivo in mice. The study reported that the in vitro activity of herbs has shown good results in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells through multiple mechanisms like induction
of apoptosis, inhibition of several oncogenic proteins, and induction of the tumor suppressor protein enhancement.
Keywords: Cancer, apoptosis, herbal plants.
