ABSTRACT
Drug discovery is the process through which potential new medicines are identified. It involves a wide range of scientific disciplines, including biology, chemistry and pharmacology. In the fields of medicine, biotechnology and pharmacology, drug discovery is the process by which new candidate medications are discovered. Historically, drugs were discovered by identifying the active ingredient from traditional remedies or by serendipitous discovery, as with penicillin. Pharmaceutical scientists usually specialize in one aspect of the drug development process. They may: Design new drug therapies using natural or synthetic (man-made) ingredients. Medications can be taken in a variety of ways—by swallowing, by inhalation, by absorption through the skin, or by intravenous injection. Each method
has advantages and disadvantages, and not all methods can be used for every medication. Drug delivery systems (DDSs) are developed to deliver the required number of drugs effectively to appropriate target sites and to maintain the desired drug levels. Research in newer DDS is being carried out in liposomes, nanoparticles, noisome, transdermal drug delivery, implants, microencapsulation, and polymers.
