MENTAL HEALTH DURING COVID19; AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH

ABSTRACT
Mental wellbeing is an integral part in defining health of a person. In Ayurveda a healthy individual (swasthya) is explained as physical and spiritual normality or potential. Mental health plays a vital role in inter personal relationships, personal communications that are necessary for social life. It affects the aspects of our thoughts, feelings, actions etc. Due to this pandemic situation of Covid19 we are facing significant changes to our daily lives that eventually affect our mental wellbeing also. Emotional conflicts such as stress regarding own health, job security, loss of loved ones are reflected in various individuals during this period. This psychological distress can also lead to altered immune functions and thereby increasing the vulnerability. To maintain mental health various govt have undertaken policies offering guidance and advices to overcome this crisis. In Ayurveda also mental health has an important role in maintaining health equilibrium. Ayurveda gives enormous attention for building up mental and physical strength to withstand various stress. There is clear description regarding the causes and various measures that should be adopted for positivity that influence mental wellbeing. According to Ayurveda both physical and mental health can be maintained by the combination therapy of proper Dinacharya [daily regimens that are followed to bring a harmony of physical and mental wellness]. Sadvrutta[ethical conducts or rules for maintaining healthy mind such as self restrainment, meditation etc Pathya ahar vihar[wholesome food and regimens that refreshes body and mind], Achara rasayan [implies the conduct of a person in social setup], Yoga and pranayama [group of physical, mental and spiritual practices]. This article is mainly intended to give a guideline for alteration of life style through Ayurveda for mental wellbeing and thereby withstanding the emotional conflicts experiencing during covid19.
