ABSTRACT
Miglitol is an oral drug used to control blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs called as alpha glucosidase inhibitors. Miglitol has shorter t 1/2 of 2 hours. The objective of study is to formulate and evaluate the alginate hydrogel beads of Miglitol as a model drug by Ionotropic gelation method using CaCl2 as cross linking agent. The hydrogel beads were formulated using sodium alginate, karaya gum, xanthan gum, guar gum as polymers. The drug is deliver at controlled/sustained manner into GIT consequently to the systemic circulation. The prepared hydrogels were evaluated for percentage yield, drug content, drug entrapment efficiency, in-vitro dissolution
study. From the nine different formulations, the results showed that out of all formulations, F6 has shown best performance and percentage drug release.
Keywords: Miglitol, Guar gum, FTIR, Xanthan gum, Karaya gum.
