ABSTRACT
The term “sustained release” is known to have existed in the medical
and pharmaceutical literature for many decades. Oral drug delivery is
the most preferred route for the various drug molecules among all
other routes of drug delivery, because ease of administration which
lead to better patient compliance. The attractiveness of these dosage
forms is due to awareness to toxicity and ineffectiveness of drugs when
administered by oral conventional method in the form of tablets &
capsules. The basic rationale of sustained release drug delivery system
optimizes the biopharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic and
pharmacodynamics properties of a drug in such a way that its utility is maximized, sideeffects
are reduced and cure of the disease is achieved. There are various physiochemical and
biological properties which affect the extended release drug delivery system. Extended
release drug formulations have been used since 1960’s. Sustained Release is also providing
promising way to decrease the side effect of drug by preventing the fluctuation of the
therapeutic concentration of the drug in the body. This article provides information about the
Sustain release formulation, Design and Fabrication of oral controlled release systems. The
basic goal of sustained release is provide promising way to decrease the side effect of drug by
preventing the fluctuation of the therapeutic concentration of the drug in the body and
increase patient compliance by reducing frequency of dose
