ABSTRACT
The present study was designed to evaluate the anticancer and antibacterial activities on the methanolic extracts of leaves, bark and fruits of Rhus javanica L., a traditional medicine of Mizoram. The anticancer activity was determined using MTT assay on HeLa cell line. The lowest IC50 value, 98.28 μg/ml was exhibited by the fruit extract. Antimicrobial activity was done by disc diffusion method against Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli. The zone of inhibition induced by the extracts was found ranging from 17.16-24.00 mm. At 100 μg, the highest zone of inhibition was recorded against P. aeruginosa (21.66 mm) induced by the bark extract. At a higher concentration of 200 μg, the highest zone
of inhibition was recorded against P. aeruginosa (24.00 mm) induced by the fruit extract. Standard antibiotic Ceftriaxone (30μg) was used as a reference. This study validates the traditional use of Rhus javanica L. as a medicine.
