ABSTRACT
Takra comes under pathya kalpana also known as ‘buttermilk’ in our general language and Takrarishta comes under Sandhana Kalpana. Acharya Charaka had explained the indication of Takra and Takrarishta in all types of Udara rogas, arsha, sthoulya, shotha and especially in Grahini roga. In Takrarishta, Takra is used as dravadravya along with Prakshepaka dravyas (supporting drug) hence called as Takrarishta. Takrarishta is mentioned in many classical texts under Grahani Rogaadhikaara (Intestinal Bowel Syndrome) and Arsha rogaadhikar (Haemorrhoids). The contents explained by Charaka in Takrarista is repeated the same in Laghutrayi‟s. This article is an attempt to review Takra and the formulation “Takrarishta” explained in various literature of Ayurveda
Pharmaceutics and our general practice.
