ABSTRACT
„Cocainisation of the spinal cord‟ was first described by August Bier in 18991. The technique has been refined since that time and has evolved into the modern concept of intrathecal, spinal or subarachnoid block (SAB)‟. Whilst growing in popularity, SAB has largely been reserved for inpatient surgery. In contrast, anaesthetists in other parts of the world have successfully used the technique for patients undergoing ambulatory surgery.
