ABSTRACT
Background: Cardiovascular diseases are group of problems that occur when the heart and its blood vessels fail to work. According to WHO, these take the lives of 17.7 million people every year and 31% of all global deaths1. Acute Myocardial infarction (121.3)2 is its most important consequence. It virtually occurs at all ages but incidence is higher in the elderly people and in males. Search for new and efficacious drugs to combat this condition is the need of the hour. Gambhari phala is mentioned as Hrudya in Sushrutha Samhitha, Ashtanga Hrudaya and Kayyadeva nighantu. Hence it is taken for present study. Materials and Methods: Aqueous and Ksheerapaka of the Gambhari phala were used as dosage forms. The study was carried
out in Isoproterenol Induced Myocardial necrosis –Rona et al method. The male wistar rats were divided into 7 groups of 6 animals in each and pre-treated with the respective doses for the period of 28 days followed by induction of necrosis. The parameters taken to access the results were CK-MB, AST, ALT, LDH, GSH, Total Protein and Histo-pathology. The results were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukeys multiple comparison tests. Results: The result of the experimental study reveal that both Ksheerapaka and aqueous extract provide an adequate protection from free radical scavengers and oxidative stress and help them in maintaining the endogenous anti-oxidant levels. They were also contributory in maintaining the structural integrity of the cardiac cells thereby preventing any leakage of enzymes into the serum. Discussion: Hrudya dravyas are congenial to mind and are ideal for heart. Hrudya karma has sub activities like Lekhana, Tarpana, Rasayana, Balya and shonita sanghata bheda. Presence of Flavonoids, Glycosides, Tannins, Triterpenoids in both the drugs are responsible for this activity. Cardio protective drugs act in different ways like anti-coagulant, vasodilator, cardiac stimulant etc.
