ABSTRACT
Objectives: The present study was carried out with the aim of assessment of Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and Minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of ethanolic extract of garcinia mangostana on Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa). Methods: MIC was carried out by using serial dilution method and cultures of microorganisms were incubated with the same drug concentrations to assess MBC. Results: Garcinia mangostana-Polyvinyl pyrolidone complex (GM-PVP) at a minimum inhibitory concentration of 10mg, showed an inhibition zone of 12mm for Porphyromonas gingivalis and 10mm for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, thus revealing its anti-microbial effect at this
concentration. Lower concentrations of the complex (1.0mg, 0.1mg, 0.01mg and 0.001mg) were insufficient to prevent growth of these organisms. Conclusion: Thus it can be concluded that, the ethanolic extract of garcinia mangostana showed antimicrobial efficacy against all the test microorganisms and further invivo research to be carried out for the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
