Abstract

PHARMACEUTICAL PROCESSING AND ANALYTICAL STUDY OF PASHANAVAJRA RASA

Amit Kumar Karna*, S. A. Doddamani and Surekha S. Medikeri

ABSTRACT

Pashanavajra rasa (PVR) is one of the herbo-mineral preparations explained for the management of mutrashmari (urinary calculi). Combination of kajjali (HgS) as yogavahi and Shweta punarnava and Pashanabheda- a known drug for mutrashmari reflects PVR to be potential but seldom used in practice. The quantum of heat and pattern in which it should be given is vague for the pharmaceutical processing of PVR. Hence, an attempt was made to prepare and develop SOP of PVR by following the reference of Yogaratnakara and set its analytical parameters. The end product was greyish black in colour. PVR had analytical specifications like 5.27 pH, 9.385% w/w Ash value, 1.05% w/w Acid insoluble ash, 4.350% w/w Loss on drying, 1.735% w/w Water soluble extractive, 1.922% w/w Alcohol soluble extractive. An XRD report of PVR showed cubic structure of HgS with some free sulphur. In SEM analysis; mean particle size of PVR was 179.9 nm. EDX analysis revealed presence of C, O, S and Hg. FTIR analysis showed –OH bonding suggesting presence of alcohol, phenols along with N-H, C-H, S-H, C=C group suggesting presence of amine salts, alkane, thiol, benzene derivative respectively.

Keywords: Pashanavajra Rasa, mutrashmari, SOP, XRD, SEM, EDX, FTIR.
