ABSTRACT
Acute liver injury is a serious state of extensive damage of liver tissue caused by various reasons. Certain medicenal plants had been used to cure some liver diseases. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of Daucus carota root juice in rabbit models with acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride at a dose of 1.25 ml/kg as a mixture with olive oil aqueous extract of Daucus carota , administered orally in a dose of 5 ml/kg body weight for 7 days. The protective effect was assessed via liver function tests. Significant reduction in the hepatic enzymes levels AST, ALT, ALP, serum creatinine, serum urea and improvement of serum glucose was found in animals treated with the extract. Our results demonstrated that the extract of Daucus carota had a significant effect in liver functions in acute liver diseases when it was given in a single daily dose of 5 ml/kg body weight. Therefore, the juice extract of Daucus carota roots can be used for preventing and treatment of liver disorder.
