ABSTRACT
Ayurveda is a time-tested holistic medicinal science. It is said to be anadi in origin. For the propagation of ayurveda, various scholars were taught in traditional gurukula system. Education was given to eligible scholars after a thorough examination of qualities of a student (shishyaguna). The transmission of knowledge was done through oral tradition. Scholars with good listening and grasping capacity brought the classical knowledge of ayurveda into manuscript form. The writing was adopted in shloka (verse) form. In the process, different techniques were adopted in scripting different samhita. An ayurveda scholar should have the knowledge of such techniques like tantrayukti, tacchilya, arthashraya and kalpana for better interpretation and
application. Apart from these, most of the commentators of classical texts have applied maxims (nyaya) in simplifying the subject matter. In this work, an attempt is made to give methodology of applying a nyaya for classical understanding with examples such as kakatali nyaya, kakadanta nyaya and kakakshigolaka nyaya.
