AN AYURVEDIC AND MODERN TREATMENT MODALITIES FOR VARICOSE VEINS-A REVIEW ARTICLE

ABSTRACT
Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of skin most common in legs and ankles. There are primary as well as secondary causes of varicose veins. The superficial perforating as well as the deep veins are involved in varicose veins. It occurs when valves become weak allowing blood to leak back-down leading to varicose, engorged and painful veins. The incidence of varicose vein is 5% in general population among which mostly are women. Although it is not a severe problem, but continuous pain causes disturbance in daily life. Modern science provides contemporary treatment for varicose veins which includes ligation, ligation with stripping, sclerotherapy, laser treatment, radial surgical approach, and bypass surgery. In Ayurveda our Acharyadescribed bheshaj chikitsa and various panchkarma procedures like Siravyadha (venesection), raktamokshan (bloodletting), jalaukavacharan (leech therapy), veshtana (wrapping of clothes or crepe bandaging). In this review article an attempt has been made to review the study carried out on varicose veins.
