MUSHROOMS: THE TREASURE OF COSMECEUTICAL AND THERAPEUTIC ESSENTIALS

ABSTRACT
Since time immemorial mushrooms have been regarded as a source of bioactive compounds and are a part of human diet. Over the years, the advancement in the field of cosmetic technology has now lead to the incorporation of bioactive metabolites derived from mushrooms into cosmetics. Mushrooms chiefly comprise of phenolic and polyphenolic compounds, terpenoids, polysaccharides, vitamins, minerals, proteins and flavanoids. They exhibit cosmeceutical activities such as antioxidative, anti-aging, antimicrobial, anti-tyrosinase, anti-collagenase and anti-elastase, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyaluronidase. This article highlights various therapeutic benefits exhibited by different species of mushrooms as well as the use and incorporation of mycochemicals in cosmetics.
