ABSTRACT
The compressional characteristics of native starch of Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum) and the mechanical properties of its tablets were investigated. Compressional characteristics were determined using Heckel and Kawakita equations/plots and density measurement. The starch exhibited good densification during die filling at low pressure and also had high moisture content of 10.5g/100g. The low value of Hausner’s ratio indicated better flowability. The values obtained for the mean particle diameter, particle density and bulk density were: 0.048 mm, 1.78 g/cm3 and 0.63 g/cm3 respectively. The results of the friability test on the tablets indicated that the tablets had better resistance to shock, friction and abrasion.
