Alfiah Putri Mulyaningsih, Rina Desni Yetti and Harrizul Rivai*

ABSTRACT

This review aims to provide basic knowledge about the medicinal plant Maja (Aegle marmelos). Maja is a traditional medicinal plant to overcome various diseases. At present many Maja medicinal plants have been used to develop traditional medicines. However, Maja's information to treat multiple diseases has not been collected entirely, so it is challenging to decide on Maja's primary uses. Therefore, we conducted a limited open search in English from the Mendeley, Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, and Pubmed databases for all available literature from 2000 to 2020. The keywords used in this search are terms related to phytochemistry, pharmacology, and Aegle marmelos. The results show that the view of the pharmacological activities of the phytochemical content of the medicinal plant Maja provides a solid basis for developing traditional medicine. The various phytochemical contents of Maja medicinal plant extracts have been revised and are considered potential agents for the control and development of traditional medicines. This review also discusses some phytochemical substances (alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, tannins, steroids, and terpenes) with various pharmacological activities from Maja. So, Maja (Aegle marmelos) has a diverse phytochemical content and has vigorous pharmacological activity. Because of this, Maja might be useful for developing traditional treatments for various diseases.

Keywords: Maja, Aegle marmelos, phytochemical review, pharmacological activity.
