Abstract

ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF MORINGA OLEIFERA AGAINST MOST COMMON PATHOGENIC MICROORGANISMS IN JAZAN REGION

Noha Emad Abdel-Razik*

ABSTRACT

The antibacterial activity of the ethanolic and aqueous extracts of Moringa oleifera leaves extracts against most common clinically isolated pathogens namely Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were evaluated using the disc diffusion method at the concentrations of 6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/ml. the antibacterial activity of the M. oleifera extracts against gram positive and negative bacteria seemed to be similar. The results on the inhibition of studied bacterial isolates were concentration dependent. The ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera leaves in different concentrations (6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/ml) were found to be active antibacterial against all the test pathogens. However, Aqueous extract from M. oleifera revealed close results with less action. At the concentration of 6.25 mg/ml the aqueous extract of this plant had no activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Proteus vulgaris. Streptococcus pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were resistant to 6.25 and 12.5 mg/ml aqueous extract. Moringa oleifera revealed antibacterial activity against most common pathogenic bacteria. So, it can be used as alternative medicine but further investigation is recommended.

Keywords: M. oleifera, antibacterial activity, pathogenic isolates.
