ABSTRACT
Background: The study entitled ―Assessment of Insulin Resistance in Family Members of Type 2 Diabetic Patients‖ was carried out in 90 patients. The objectives of this study were to assess Insulin resistance and the degree of awareness of diet, physical exercise, and lifestyle modifications among family members of patients with diabetes. Method: A retrospective study was conducted for 1 year i.e., from 2018 to 2019. Those patients who meet the study criteria will be enrolled in to the study. This observational study was conducted using fasting plasma insulin, fasting plasma sugar and questionnaire about food habits, physical activity, life style among Type 2 diabetic family members and HOMA IR value calculated. All the raw data was collected, entered in SAS 9.4 version, the statistical analysis was done in SAS Software by an appropriate statistical procedure like proc means. Results: Out of 90 cases, The mean age of occurrence of diabetes in study population was found to be 39.5±12.67 years and overall Insulin resistance cases includes 77 severe,13 moderate, 0 mild. 88% of the subjects have high insulin resistance and 12% of the subjects have moderate insulin resistance. From our study, it was observed that females were at high risk for development of diabetes than males and we observed that diabetes is most prevalent in patients of age group 20-30 years. Conclusion: Despite the clear attitudes of participants towards their dietary pattern and healthy lifestyle modifications, the awareness and the practice were poor among the study group. Effective life style modifications including counselling on weight loss, adoption of a healthy dietary pattern like the Mediterranean diet, together with physical activity are the corner stone in the prevention of type2 DM. Therefore emphasis must be given to promoting a healthier lifestyle and finding solutions in order to increase adherence and compliance to the life style modifications, especially for high-risk individuals.
