ABSTRACT
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) has been used as a dietary supplement at different doses in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM), hepatic disease, cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders due to its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycaemic effects. However, the effect of alpha lipoic acid is been controversial as per reports. Due to this, objective of present study is to determine the effect of alpha lipoic acid on various biological process like on oxidative stress (OxS), inflammation and RAGE in adults with T2DM. An experimental study was carried out with a sample of 135 sedentary subjects (98 women and 37 men) with a mean age of 64 ± 1 year, who all had T2DM. GPx in the CG with regards to EG and PG. It is been observed that effect of Alpha lipoic acid at 600mg/day for six months shows effect similar to that of placebo on oxidative stress, inflammation and RAGE in adults with T2DM. Therefore there is need to increase in dose of ALA to show maximum effect.
