Abstract

FT-IR AND GC-MS DETERMINATION OF BIOACTIVE CONSTITUENTS OF ALOE BARBADENSIS MILLER (LILIACAE).

Devasir Samson Edward and Mariappan Vaitheeswaran*

ABSTRACT

Aloe barbadensis Miller is one of the medicinally important plants belonging to the family Liliaceae, commonly known in tamil as “Kathalai” traditionally used to treat burns, wounds and sores. It is also used in cosmetic industries. The present investigation deals with the GC-MS determination of methanol extract and FT-IR analysis of the above said plant. Fourteen phytochemical constituents have been identified by comparing the chromatogram, peak value of unknown compound with entries in NIST database. n-Hexadecanoic acid, 9,12- Octadecadienoic acid (Z,Z)- (Linoleic acid) and Cedrol are the prevailing compounds in the methanol extract of A. barbadensis, which is suggested to have nematicidal activity. The presence of various bioactive compounds confirms the application of A. barbadensis for various ailments. However, isolation of individual phytochemical constituent may ensue to find a novel drug.

Keywords: GC-MS, FT-IR, Aloe barbadensis, n-Hexadecanoic acid, 9-12 Octadecadienoic acid, cedrol.
