Abstract

NANOEMULSIONS FOR NOSE TO BRAIN DRUG DELIVERY

ABSTRACT

An advanced mode of drug delivery system has been developed to overcome the major drawbacks associated with conventional drug delivery system. Nanoemulsion are nano sized emulsion, which are manufactured for improving the delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients. These are the thermodynamically stable isotropic system in which two immiscible liquids are mixed to form a single phase by means of an emulsifying agents i.e surfactant and co-surfactant. The Blood-Brain Barrier [BBB] plays a fundamental role in protecting the brain from toxic substances. Also control the water soluble therapeutic agent not to cross the BBB. Therefore, nanoemulsions required to pass the therapeutic agents to cross the BBB by increasing bioavailaibility of drug and avoid such as first pass effect, low solubility in water, poor bio availability, enzymatic degradation and slow onset of action. Issues. Through nasal route. The drug can access the brain directly along the trigeminal nerves and olfactory nerves located on the upper part of nasal cavity. Nanomedicine consists of emulsion [mostly oil in water] stabilized by one or more surfactant or co-surfactant delivered in droplets of small dimensions [100 to 300 nm or less] with high surface area. This nanoemulsions are non-invasive, non-irritant, effective and safe drug delivery system.

Keywords: Blood-brain barrier; brain targeting; nanoemulsion; nose-to-brain delivery; nasal mucosa; olfactory pathway.
