ABSTRACT
In the world wide general population increase in the prevalence of mental health disorders or psychiatric disorders is foreseen. Yet the response rate to the regular psychiatric treatment is still unsatisfactory. This response to treatment may be either due pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic or even pharmacological conditions. Recent studies have shown that the microbiota may play a major role in various neurological and psychological disorders. Also it is implicated that gut microbiota may influence the hosts behavior on drug metabolism, hence causing it’s ineffectiveness and side effects. The present article reviews theories and evidence regarding the possible mechanism by which microbiota may contribute in psychiatric disorders, and possibility of treating these disorders by targeting the microbiota.
