DIABETES MELLITUS: A REVIEW ON PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, CURRENT MANAGEMENT AND FUTURE PERSPECTIVES

ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic health disease which affects global population from long time. Diabetes mellitus belongs to the metabolic diseases and main symptom associated with this disease is the high sugar levels in blood for a long period. Diabetes complications include possible cardiovascular diseases, renal complications and blindness. Recent researches into the pathophysiology of Diabetes mellitus have led to introduction of new medications like glucagon-like peptide 1 analogues, dipeptidyl peptidases-4 inhibitors (gliptins), thiazolidinediones (glitazones). Furthermore, herbal extracts are also being used in the management of diabetes due to their fewer side effects. This review summarizes the pathophysiology, the variety of current status of medication and future perspectives.
