EFFECTS OF CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS ON GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN AT TIKRIT TEACHING HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
This is a case-control study carried out on (61) patients with congenital heart disease attending Teaching Hospital during the period from 15-3-2013 to 15-9-2013, their ages ranging from 15 days up to 13 years, a sixty one healthy child, age and sex matched were considered as a control group. Ventricular Septal Defect was commonest cardiac defect occur in (44.2%) of cases followed by Tetralogy Of Fallet and Atrial Septal Defect; (22.9%) and (16.3%) respectively, Growth failure was present in 39.3% of cases especially those with Atrial Septal Defect, developmental delay in 30% of cases. Males were predominate
in case of Ventricular Septal Defect, Tetralogy Of Fallet and Transposition of Great vessels while females predominate in case of pulmonary stenosis and Patient Ductus Arteriosus. Down syndrome was the commonest associated syndrome with Congenital Heart Defect (4.9%), consaguinity present in (24.5%) of cases. Majorities of patients were lived in rural areas. From this study we conclude that Congenital Heart Defect has a major effect on growth and nutritional status therefore establishment of Cardiology unit in Tikrit city is essential to deal with this high risk group.
