Abstract

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF LEFT VENTRICULAR DIASTOLIC FUNCTION IN ASYPTOMATIC TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS IN SULAIMANI DIABETIC CENTRE

ABSTRACT

Background: Diastolic dysfunction in patients with type DM is common in asymptomatic patients which appear earlier than systolic dysfunction. Aims of the study: To evaluate Echocardiographic left ventricular diastolic function in asymptomatic Type DM excluding other structural heart diseases. Patients & Methods: From November • •to February • •, a descriptive based study was done which included • asymptomatic patients with type diabetes, the age range from• to ° years (female, ma1e) without evidence of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure or chronic disease. LVDD was evaluated by Doppler echocardiography, which pseudonormal pattern of left ventricular dysfunction had been excluded by this study. The prevalence of LVDD and the associated risk factors were assessed. Results: LVDD was found in • subjects (' %) of whom had impaired relaxation. Systolic function was normal in all subjects, and there was correlation between LVDD and mode of treatment and gender of patients, patients using OHGD have more risk than just on diet, females were at a higher risk of developing diastolic dysfunction when compared to men, also no correlation between LVDD and indexes of glycemic severity and duration of disease. It was found that LVDD wasn’t related with the increasing age between (• -° years). Conclusions: impaired relaxation (grade 1) is more common early finding of diastolic dysfunction in asymptomatic type DM, which was more common in female than male and those using OHGD than those on diet therapy and not related with glycemic severity, duration of disease, and age of this group.
