ABSTRACT
The plant Tectona grandis Linn. (TG) commonly known as 'Teak'
(English) is a deciduous tree belongs to the Family “Verbenaceae”.
The phytochemical investigation of different extracts and Anthelmintic
activity of the methanolic and aqueous extracts (roots) of Tectona
grandis were performed. Phytochemical screening showed the
presence of alkaloids carbohydrates, phenolic compounds, flavonoids,
sterols, glycosides and saponins. Methanolic and aqueous roots
extracts of Tectona grandis were evaluated separately on developed
Indian earthworm (Pheretima posthuma) and the activities were
compared with standard drug piperazine citrate. It was found that
methanol and aqueous extracts of Tectona grandis exhibited dose dependant action and
inhibition of spontaneous motility (paralysis) and death of earthworms. The results showed
that the methanolic extracts were more potent than aqueous extracts.
