ABSTRACT
Antioxidants are compounds that helps in inhibition of oxidation. At relatively small concentration; it has diverse physiological role in the body. The following study was carried out to identify the phytochemicals present and evaluate and examine the antioxidant activity of chloroform extract of Delonix regia leaves. The antioxidant activity was determined by different methods such as DPPH radical scavenging assay, Hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay and reducing power assay. The Delonix regia leaves also called as leaves of chloroform extract contain terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and Tannins. The results observed that the Delonix regia leaves shows higher antioxidant potential and compared to all these three methods, DPPH assay observed high antioxidant activity. On the basis of the results, Delonix regia appears to have potential for treatment of oxidative stress related diseases. This leaves of Delonix regia seems to be the naturally occurring antioxidants.
Keywords: Antioxidant activity, flavonoids, terpenoids, hydrogen peroxide, tannins.
