A REVIEW ARTICLE ON ANTIOXIDANT PROFILE OF GREEN TEA POLYPHENOLS IN THE TREATMENT OF VARIOUS DISEASES

ABSTRACT
Green Tea, neutraceutical is a most popular antioxidant beverage obtained from the leaves and leaf buds of Camellia thea, belonging to family Theaceae. The beneficial medicinal and health improving properties ascribed to the consumption of green tea against a wide variety of ailments is related to the presence of its bioactive constituents mainly polyphenols, such as catechins. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) content is very high in green tea. According to the data from an in vitro and in vivo studies, polyphenols have possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial properties that enhances the health promoting benefits of green tea. As an antioxidant profile, the EGCG reduces the oxidative stress by inhibiting the ROS formation or enhances the activity of body’s antioxidant enzymatic mechanism. In this paper, various preclinical studies have revealed the efficacy of green tea catechins in the treatment of neurological, cardiovascular disorders, obesity, antimicrobial infections, inflammatory and oxidative stress induce diseases.
