Abstract

A REVIEW ON THE THERAPEUTIC POTENTIALITY OF COW URINE

ABSTRACT

Gomutra, also known as cow urine played a significant role in Indian tradition. Panchagavya chikitsa, also known as cowpathy, includes the five contents that are obtained from cow such as Curd, Dung, Ghee, Milk and Urine. Different Indian system of medicine has mentioned the significant uses of cow urine for the treatment of various disorders. Bos indicus is placed at the high pedastal for the numerous uses of its products. As per description in “Sushrita Samhita” and “Ashtanga Sangraha” cow urine is the secretion of an animal origin that is recognized with innumerable therapeutic values. For this reason, it is considered as water of life or “Amrita”. The use of cow urine for the treatment of diseases, in Indian system of medicine has a long history and no doubt, it has shown the magnificent results as well. All the five components obtained from cow do possess some of the medicinal properties and these are either used individually or in combination to cure certain diseases. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicines belief that, cow urine is useful for the treatment of kapha diseases and vata disorders. They consider urine as one of the product obtained from cow with high benefits and without any toxicity. It is still used by many people for keeping up their health high and free from diseases. But, still public awareness need to be promoted for the importance and the wide applications of cow urine for maintaining the high standards of life.
