A BRIEF REVIEW ON NIOSOMES: NIOSOMES APPLICATIONS FOR ORAL DELIVERY
Maqbul Aktar*, Ganesh N. S. and Vineeth Chandy
ABSTRACT
Niosomes are one of the promising drug carriers that have a bilayer structure and are formed by self-association of non- ionic surfactants and cholesterol in an aqueous phase. Noisome are biodegradable, biocompatible, and nonimmunogenic. Niosomes are the vesicular carriers of non-ionic surfactant used in the drug delivery systems, as a tool to improve drug absorption. They have long shelf life, exhibit high stability, and enable the delivery of drug at target site in a controlled and/or sustained manner. They potentiate the pharmacological action of the drug molecules by delaying the clearance of the drug from the circulation, shielding the drug from harsh biological environment and
restricting the effects only to the target cells. Niosomes has application in oral, parenteral, topical, and novel drug delivery for controlled and target delivery, such as in the treatment of cancer, as a carrier in haemoglobin, delivery of peptide drugs through oral route. The main aim of current review is to focus on noisome structure and properties of surfactant, composition, advantages, types of noisome, method of preparation, characterization and its application.
