ABSTRACT
The Siddha system of medicine is an ancient system of medicine, mainly practiced in the Southern part of India. It is one of the earliest traditional medicine systems in the world which treats not only the body but also the mind and the soul. Use of plants as a source of medicine has been inherited and is an important component of health care system in India. Most of the drugs today are obtained from natural sources or semi synthetic derivatives of natural products and used in the traditional systems of medicine. A larger part of the total population in developing countries still uses traditional folk medicine obtained from plant resources Aadutheenda paalai is the medicinal
herb which is widely used for treatment of skin diseases, inflammation and purgative. Root extract was accounted to have anti-bacterial activity. Botanical name of aaadutheenda paalai is Aristolochia bracteolata. Aristolochia is a large plant genus with over 500 species, belongs to the family Aristolochiaceae. Here, an attempt has been made to review the explored ethnopharmacological activities of the Aadutheenda paalai to strengthen the scientific facts favoring this medicinal plant.
