Abstract
CONCEPT OF AHARA AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE

ABSTRACT
Ayurveda is the the oldest living philosophical based medical science, which is still being practiced widely to day. Ahara is one of the main pillars of human body. As Acharyas had described that Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacharya are Triupstambh which support the body itself, Ahara is the nourishment of the body elements; vital essence, vitality, complexion and other things, but its action is dependent on the proper function of Jatharagni. The Ahara dravya comprising of six Rasas, get transformed into three kinds of Vipaka by the action of Jatharagni. All living beings in the universe require food, in biology it is known that the human beings are the consumer because of ingesting nutrients, mineral, vitamins and water etc for their survival. The importance of food cannot be ignored food sustains the life of living beings, Proper growth and maintenance of the body depends on the balanced diet. Ahara and the dietetic rules are basic factors among the causes of disease.
