THE CONCEPT OF NIQRIS (GOUT) AND ITS MANAGEMENT IN UNANI SYSTEM OF MEDICINE: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Niqris (gout) is a type of Waja‘ al-Mafasil (arthritis) which is characterized by recurrent attack of acute pain and swelling primarily affecting one joint usually the metatarsal joint of big toe and small joints of hand and feet. It is a commonest joint pain creating problems in day to day life of various people of the world. In modern treatment various drugs like colchicine, uricosuric drugs, NSAID’s, glucocorticoids etc. are used to cure this condition, but due to adverse and toxic effects like hypersensitivity, vomiting, gastro intestinal bleeding, hepato-renal toxicity etc., new drugs from Traditional Systems of Medicines viz. Unani, Ayurveda and Siddha etc. are getting attention of researchers today. Unani System Medicine (USM) has now become famed for its unique concept of disease and there management
on the basis of humours and there imbalance in the body, given by Hippocrates. Four modes of treatment depending upon the nature of ailments are used in USM, those are regimental therapy, dieto-therapy, pharmacotherapy and surgery. The objective of this study is to recollect the information about the Unani concept of Niqris (gout) from classical literatures, books, articles and research papers availablein the library of RRIUM, Srinagar and on different websites online.
