STROKE IN PATIENTS WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION, ITS TYPES AND RISK FACTORS

ABSTRACT
Background: AF is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, affecting 0.5% of the adult population, its prevalence increases with age affecting 6% of the population older than 65 years. It is associated with 5- 6 % per year risk of embolic stroke which can occur at any age but it is a predominant problem of elderly. Patients and Methods: The study was done in the period of January 2007 to September 2007 and included 80 patients of stroke and AF admitted to the medical department of Sulaimani General Hospital. We studied the causes of AF and risk factors for stroke in those patients, types of stroke, prophylactic medications (aspirin or warfarin) which were taken by the
patients and causes for not using them properly.
