ABSTRACT

Coumarins are a group of natural phenolic compounds that shows several pharmacological activities and the 3-hydroxycoumarin represents as target valuable molecules against several diseases. This study aimed to investigate the antioxidant, cytotoxic and hemolytic activities of 3-hydroxycoumarin. Antioxidant activity was performed using 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Cytotoxicity was estimated using MTT assay on J774 macrophages and their morphology analyzed by phase- contrast microscopy. Hemolytic activity was assessed lysis of the red blood cells under in vitro conditions. Our results indicate that 3-hydroxycoumarin behaved as an in vitro antioxidant (IC50: 67.69 ± 6.89 μg/mL), revealed cytotoxicity (CC50: 97.69 ± 9.41μg/mL) and morphological changes from 100 μg/mL and did not induce hemolysis. Further studies will be required to understand the probable mechanisms of action of this potential derivate.

Keywords: 3-hydroxycoumarin, antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, hemolytic activity, morphological analysis.
