ABSTRACT
In present work an attempt has been made to prepare fast dissolving tablets of Theophylline, a xanthine bronchodilator, is used to prevent and treat wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty in breathing caused by asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other lung diseases. Theophylline fast dissolving tablet prepared by direct compression method using combination of different superdisintegrants and sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate was used to mask the bitter taste of theophylline and it also helps in disintegration as it form carbon dioxide when come in contact with water and makes the preparation more pleasant. Formulations were evaluated for weight
variation, hardness, friability, disintegration time. It can be concluded that Formulation F3 disintegrate within 27 seconds and it passes all quality control test according to I.P. Thus, an attempt was made to improve the onset of action of theophylline used commonly in the treatment of asthma and to improve patient compliance. This drug delivery system may be an effective alternative for administration of intra venous theophylline and oral liquid dosage form of Theophylline.
