ABSTRACT
Abutilon indicum (L.) Sweet (Family: Malvaceae) is an Asian phytomedicine traditionally used as an aphrodisiac, laxative, diuretic, sedative, astringent, expectorant, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, and analgesic and to treat leprosy, ulcers, gonorrhoea, and bladder infection. This is possible by inhibiting certain carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzyme like α-amylase and α-glucosidase. The objective of present study was to evaluate α-amylase inhibitory activity of hydro alcoholic extract of whole plant of Abutilon indicum. Hydro alcoholic extract of whole plant of Abutilon indicum showed significant α-amylase inhibition (IC50 36.05±4.01μg/ml). These results suggest the possible use of whole plant of Abutilon indicum in the management of diabetes mellitus.
