ABSTRACT

Tablet coating is the key step involved in the manufacturing of tablets having controlled release or delayed release profiles and improve the bio availability of the active drug. The advantages of tablet coating are to improve the appearance of the tablet or to hide the visual defect, to mask odor, taste, color of the drug, providing physical and chemical protection to drug, Protecting drug from the gastric environment. Three primary components of tablet coating are tablet properties, coating process and coating composition. Tablets are usually coated in rotating pan (horizontal or vertical rotating pan) with coating solution is either directly poured or sprayed on to them. The percent weight gain and uniformity of the tablet coating are important for uniform release of drug. Recent trends in tablet coating focuses to improve the drug bio availability and reduce the adverse reaction of drug. This article concerns with the type of tablet, coating process parameters, coating composition and defects in tablet and their remedies.
