ABSTRACT
The present study was performed to evaluate the antiulcerogenic activity of ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb by indomethacin- induced gastric mucosal damage in rats. Effect of different doses of ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb, omeprazole on ulcer index were observed. In addition, the effect of low dose of ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb in combination with low dose of omeprazole on the above parameters were studied. Ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb (200 and 400mg/kg), omeprazole (20mg/kg) produced significant antiulcer effect. Low doses of omeprazole and ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb did not alter above parameter significantly. Combined administration of low dose of omeprazole with ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb shows significant antiulcer effect where the reduction of gastric secretion, acidity and ulcer index with simultaneous increase in gastric pH.
Keywords: Ethanolic extract of Beta Vulgaris Bulb, omeprazole, indomethacin- induced gastric mucosal damage, ulcer index.
