ABSTRACT
In the past few years, pharmacist and scientist are trying to explore transdermal and transmucosal routes as an alternative to injection. The alternative goal for the administration of drug choice is to resolve the weakness associated with the other path of oral cavity buccal administration. The relative disadvantages with the delivery of oral drugs are the extensive presystemic metabolism, instability in acidic medium resulting in insufficient drug absorption. Although parental route may resolve the oral route-related downside, these formulations have high costs, monitoring is required, and less patient adherence is required. The medication is passed directly into systemic circulation through the buccal path, less hepatic metabolism and high bioavailability. The purpose of the review article is an overview of the
delivery of buccal drugs, oral mucosa anatomy, drug penetration mechanism, and their method of testing for in-vitro and in-vivo mucoadhesion.
Keywords: Mucoadhesive, Buccal route, Bio adhesion, Permeation enhancers.
