IDENTIFICATION OF BIOACTIVE CONSTITUENTS FROM AQUEOUS SEED EXTRACTS OF TRIGONELLA FOENUM-GRAECUM L. AND PIPER NIGRUM L. BY GC-MS ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT

Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and Piper nigrum L. are medicinally important plants and locally available species. Trigonella foenum–graecum L. belonging to the family Fabaceae and Piper nigrum L. belongs to the family Piperaceae. The present study was carried out to identify the phyto constituents of aqueous extracts of Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and Piper nigrum L. analysed by GC-MS. The mass spectrum of the phytochemical compounds found in the extracts were matched with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library. Twelve phytochemical constituents were identified from each sample. All the identified compounds were medicinally valuable for the treatment of various human diseases and the phytochemical compounds were important to future investigations for the development of novel lead compounds for therapeutic use.
