Traditional system of medicine consists of large number of plants with various medicinal and pharmacological importance and hence represents a priceless tank of new bioactive molecules. Pongamia pinnata(Linn.) Pierre is one amongst these, found all over the world. Pongamia pinnata traditionally used as medicinal plants. All parts of the plant have been used as crude drug for the treatment of tumors, piles, skin diseases, wounds and ulcers (Tanaka et al. 1992). In the traditional system of medicines, such as Ayurveda and Unani, the Pongamia pinnata plant is used for anti-inflammatory, anti-plasmodial, anti-nonciceptive, anti-hyperglycamic, anti-lipidperoxidative, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-ulcer, anti-hyperammonic and antioxidant activity (Chopade et al. 2009). Especially used in the treatment to the bacterial infection diseases. Five decoctions of bark (mg/ml) of Pongamia pinnata and the reference drug amoxicillin (500mg) were used in the evaluation of Anti-bacterial activity. Followed the antibacterial sensitivity test (ABST) (Kirby – Bauer method). The effect of different decoctions on the bacterial strains were assayed by agar well diffusion method. Mean inhibitory zone diameters of sample 30gm/120ml, 60gm/240ml, 120gm/480ml, 240gm/960ml, 480mg/1920ml and reference drug is Amoxicillin (10mg/50 UL) respectively. Inhibitory zone percentage of samples A B C D E & F were 24.81% 27.14%17.82% 16.28% and 19.38% respectively. It is concluded that Pongamia pinnata decoction possessed strong activity of wound healing and cleansing.
