ABSTRACT
Introduction: Vaccines are administered on a large scale during mass immunization campaigns. Occasionally they can cause adverse event, and compromise mass campaigns. Our objective was to study implementation of regulation on monitoring adverse events following immunization, during the first mass campaign against measles, from january 15 to 24th 2003, in Senegal. Methodology: It's a descriptive epidemiological study of AEFI monitoring system during the mass campaign. The monitoring was active, with a daily notification. Results: AEFI monitoring system was set up in accordance with the pharmacovigilance order. A total of 90 AEFI cases were reported during the campaign. The sex ratio was 0.9 and the average age of subjects involved was 7 years old. There were 13 hospitalizations out of 90 cases, and the outcome was favorable in 100% to recovery.
Conclusion: Despite a low level of intra-regional completeness, implementation of regulation on monitoring AEFI was effective during immunization campaign against measles, and in accordance with main pharmacovigilance order provisions.
