Abstract

UTILITY OF UPAMANA PRAMANA IN DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF DISEASES

ABSTRACT

The purpose of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of the healthy person and cure of diseases of a patient. For achieving this purpose different type of pramana or examination have been described in Ayurveda. Upamana pramana is an important tool of examination in Ayurveda. Mainly similarity and dissimilarity based Upamana is described for diagnostic and treatment purpose of diseases. The knowledge of any subject through upama becomes very simple and clear. Therefore, in Ayurveda, the Acharya have tried to simplify and clarify the subject by the use of the upama so that complex issues related to disease diagnosis and treatment can be easily understood. In this present study some well known examples of diseases related to specific upama will be collected from Ayurveda samhitas and explain differential diagnosis between two diseases or types of a disease with presence of specific character related to color, size, shape, sound, smell, touch, nature of pain etc.
