ABSTRACT

Citric acid is a commercially important acid that has many applications in varying sectors of industries also it plays potent role in preprocessing, bioremidation and brewing industries hence, our study focuses on production of citric acid by optimizing the conditions. The citric acid production was optimized by screening different fermentation parameters which gives high yield. It produce by various substrates through solid state or submerged fermentation. Water hyacinth is used as a substrate for citric acid production using apergillusniger. CA Production by A.niger with different Water hyacinth in surface liquid culture was shown to hold promise. Theutilization of Water hyacinth is observed for this process contributes to a reduction in waste management also. In this work high amount of citric acid was obtained in Water hyacinth due to high amount of sugar content. Nitrogen source has no significant effect on CA production it act as a limiting factors and the type of concentration of source affects the concentration of CA production. Ammonium nitrate has more available nitrogen required for the growth of fungi. Hence proved to be a good nitrogen source as reported in earlier studies. Our study reveals the optimum conditions for citric acid production are pH-3.5, Temperature 30˚c, inoculum level – 5% and the time course – 192 hours.

Keywords: Citric acid (CA), Aspergillus niger, Water hyacinth (WH), Solid state fermentation, optimum condition.
