Abstract

EVALUATION OF WOUND HEALING ACTIVITY OF “Maranta arundinacea” RHIZOMES ON ALBINO RAT

Sudhir*, Rashmi Khanijau and Rajesh Asijac

ABSTRACT

The present work is evaluation of Maranta arundinacea rhizomes for wound healing activity. In this screening the main effect observed for aquas and alcoholic extract for Maranta arundinacea were: Wound contraction Period of epithelization, Breaking strength, Wound healing activity of aquas and alcoholic extract of Maranta arundinacea was confirmed by its effects on excision and incision. Preliminary phytochemical investigation of Maranta arundinacea was carried out and found that it contains carbohydrates, tannins, anthraquinone glycosides and protein. Two doses of M.A. (250 mg/Kg, 500mg/Kg) were selected based on the toxicity studies; there was no mortality up to 2000mg/Kg. Hence the 1/8th and 1/4th of the toxicity dose was selected for the preparation of oral dose. Two different dose of M.A. (5%, 10%) were selected for the preparation of gel formulation, and the particular gel base has been selected after performing the penetration study through cellophane membrane. In excision wound model, both M.A. (5%) and M.A. (10%) both showed significant effect in period of epithelization and wound contraction, which is comparable to standard drug Aloe vera. In incision wound model, M.A. (5%) and M.A. (10%) both showed significant increase in breaking strength when compared with control, the effect is comparable to standard drug Aloe vera. Taken together, these results suggest that the aquas and alcoholic extract of Maranta arundinacea has wound healing activity. These interesting activities require further research to identify the compounds involved followed by determination of mechanism of action.

Keywords: Phytoconstituents, Wound healing, anthraquinone glycosides.
