ABSTRACT
Curcumin, a naturally occurring molecule with numerous pharmacological activities. But due to its limited aqueous solubility and degradation at alkaline pH reduces its bioavailability. Solid dispersions of curcumin with hydrophilic polymers such as poloxamer 188 and HPMC K15 M in the weight ratio of 1:2:2; 1:3:0 and 1:3:3 respectively were prepared by solvent evaporation method. Physical characterization with IR, DSC studies revealed the changes in the solid state during preparation of solid dispersion and revealed the formation of high energy amorphous phase. Both solubility and dissolution rate
of curcumin solid dispersions were enhanced as compared to pure drug. It is also observed that solid dispersion of curcumin with poloxamer 188 gives better dissolution as competed with HPMC K15 M. The solid dispersion in the ratio of 1:3:3 indicated better solubility as compared to other ratios.
